About Hunyuan Taiji

Hunyuan Taiji is a modern system of Taiji and Qigong with ancient roots. Its benefits encompass the areas of health, spirituality, and martial arts. Hunyuan Taiji’s emphasis is on nurturing as the means to cultivating both martial prowess and martial virtue. Our health and integrity are our greatest assets as human beings, and with this practice we seek to preserve both. The essence of this practice is to cultivate stillness to find the root of movement, and employ movement to nurture the return to stillness. In this way we harmonize with the principle that underlies all things

The Lineage

The Hunyuan Taiji System was created by Grandmaster Feng Zhiqiang. He developed the system from the teachings of two giants of twentieth century internal martial arts and qigong: Hu Yaozhen 胡躍貞, a famous Chinese doctor, Taoist practitioner, and Xinyi Quan master who is considered by many to be the father of modern qigong; and Chen Fake 陳發科, the foremost practitioner of Chen Style Taijiquan in the twentieth century. Under the tutelage of these two great masters, Feng Zhiqiang penetrated the inner meaning of Taijiquan.

Grandmaster Feng Zhiqiang 馮志強, born in 1928, began the study of martial arts over seventy years ago. He is an 18th-generation grandmaster of Chen Style Taijiquan and is widely recognized as one of the greatest living Taiji masters. As the foremost authority on Chen style Taijiquan in modern times, he was instrumental in resuscitating Chen style in its home of Chen village after the Cultural Revolution. As the creator of the Hunyuan Taiji system, he corrected internal problems within the Chen style, improving upon its health and martial benefits by fusing it with Taoist cultivation methods.

Grandmaster Feng Zhiqiang is a board member of the China Martial Arts Association, advisor to the Beijing Municipal Martial Arts Association, chairman of the Beijing Chen Style Taijiquan Research Association and president of the Feng Zhiqiang Martial Arts Academy.
